In the summer of 2009, I travelled around China taking pictures of fish products for a company located in Beijing. While doing my job, I found the people and the fish factories excite me more then the fish itself. These pictures were taken in Beijing, Shanghai and Yantai.

Title / DATA SCAVENGING
240 pages / full color
Hard cover / image wrap
Pocket size / 9cm x 13.3cm

Printed and ready for purchase in January 2012.

"Scavenging is both a carnivorous and herbivorous feeding behavior in which individual scavengers search out dead animals (corpses or carrion) and dead plant biomass on which to feed." -Almighty Wikipedia

DATA SCAVENGING arose from a fascination of an intersection of Native American tribes and early photo portraiture. The images were found in an online database of portraits taken in the 19TK's; each image has been color-tinted according to tribe (from Apache to Winnebago) and assigned a circle or rectangle for gender.

The act of scavenging is to simultaneously save and destroy, to glean something that has been over-looked, left-behind. The very fact that these photographs were taken point to the demise of their subjects; the colonizers who carried the technology to archive these tribes also hastened their disintegration.

By tinting and categorizing the images, their content has been further scavenged-- saved from the informational abyss of the internet, but also subtly defiled.

In the summer of 2011 I had the chance to document several fish factories in China. I was consumed by the colors I came across in these enormous spaces. Some of them were located underground which made the experience quite surreal. The workers wore hygeniec suits with spontaneous pastel colored details here and there, the workers blended easily into these factories as if the color scheme wasn’t complete with out there being humanly colors involved. Such photogenic spaces and coordinated images they were with out even knowing this and with no artistic function whatsoever, untill someone picks up a camera.

This photo series contains a 48 pages full color printed Newspaper with an edition of 50. Printed in London, newspaperclub.

Eliza is actually a computer generated therapist. we all had to show you how Eliza works and how she is made to act human. The task was to crack the code and make her act different. I gave Eliza the Capgras syndrome, whereby she started not only not to trust others but also not herself. In the book you can read a conversation between my Little sister and Eliza. You can pull the yellow pages out of the book to see how every line is analysed in code and how she generates these strange sentences.

Come & Go is a project which consists out of a book and an envelope wall. Each envelope on the wall contains a person that has been executed on death row in one specific jail in the U.S. The word on the envelope is the very last word the prisoner said before being executed. Inside the envelope you'll find all kinds of personal information like name, age, weight, mug shot, place and what murder they committed. On the back of the envelope you're able to read their full last sentences. The wall is made chronologically stating from the prison's very first execution in 1982 till this very day. It's an analogue info-graphic showing that a large quantity of data can still be very individually based and very much so readable. The wall will keep on growing as the executions will keep on taking place.
